Middletown, NY — Chirocare of Middletown NY is joining chiropractic physicians nationwide this October during National Chiropractic Health Month to help raise awareness of available non-drug solutions to pain management in the midst of the country’s opioid epidemic.
The campaign promotes the use of alternative therapies such as chiropractic care, before turning to opioids and other riskier treatments for pain with the hashtag #Chiropractic1st.
“Chiropractic is an effective first line of defense against pain because it is less invasive and has no harmful side-effects,” says Dr. Jeffrey Spina. “It’s important that patients who are in pain are made aware that they have non-drug options available to them.”
Statistics from the Centers from Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) show that as many as twenty percent of patients in primary care settings who receive prescription opioids long-term for non-cancer pain struggle with addiction. Also, a recent poll by the Kaiser Family Foundation revealed that nearly fifty percent of Americans say they personally know someone addicted to prescription painkillers.
To address this problem of opioid misuse, the CDC’s new Guideline for Prescribing Opioids for Chronic Pain encourages medical doctors to utilize conservative care and to consider non-addictive options. Treatments such as spinal manipulation by chiropractic physicians take a drug-free approach to fixing common conditions such as back pain, neck pain and other musculoskeletal disorders and has been found in several studies to be effective and safe.
Hosted by the American Chiropractic Association, National Chiropractic Health Month (NCHM) is a nationwide observance held each October. The event raises public awareness of the benefits of chiropractic care and its natural, whole-person, patient-centered approach to pain and health and wellness.
